Boredwalk Community: In Defense of Halloween

Never Trust the Living Shirt

Welcome to our weekly Boredwalk Community series, where we ask Boredwalk fans fun questions! This week we're talking to Jimmy A. of Fairfax VA, who's looking sharp in a Never Trust the Living shirt.

1.What's your actual day job and what's your dream day job?

I was an elementary school teacher for 10 years, mostly teaching 2nd and 3rd grade. I became a stay-at-home dad after my oldest joined the family. These days I spend my time taking care of my sons (Carter, 4, and Casper, 1) and our Pomeranian, Midnight. My dream job would be to work as a designer for a professional haunted house. I also love the idea of running a seasonal Halloween store that would sell costumes and props. Basically any job in the Halloween industry would probably make me smile 24/7.

2. If you could have any super power what would it be and why?

I would want the power to heal people. It would feel nice to be able to make other people's physical and emotional pain go away. (Ed. note: How sweet!)

3. You can curse your nemesis with a minor annoyance for eternity; what do you choose?

I would want my nemesis's shoes to come untied every time he/she tried to do something sneaky.

4. What experience do you most want to cross off your bucket list?

There are several places I'd love to visit. I'd most love to visit Paris, New Orleans, the Winchester Mystery House, Disneyland, San Francisco, and Salem, MA, someday. (If you ever make it out to Disneyland, let me know — Anaheim is just a hop, skip, and jump away!)

5. Clear up a misconception (about your job, where you are from, some other topic you know a lot about.)

I think that a lot of people think that folks that are Halloween home haunters are sinister people. Actually, I'm quite the opposite. I like to think I'm a very kind and gentle person. Ever since I was a little boy I have loved monsters and creepy stuff, but that doesn't mean I would ever want to see anyone seriously harmed. It is all just make believe and for fun. My yard haunt is meant to give the neighborhood kids some special holiday memories that they can take with them for the rest of their lives. It is also a creative outlet for me. Nothing makes me happier than when a neighborhood family tells me that seeing my yard haunt is one of their family's favorite Halloween traditions.
