πŸŽƒ Pumpkin spice season starts...NOW!

MAKE THE MOST OF IT!

Happy Autumnal Equinox! Lay down your scythe, stock up your root cellar, and prepare your waistline for the coming gauntlet of carbs!

This guy/gal/androgynous non-binary metaphysical entity is a laugh riot at fall parties. Probably.

Admittedly, it doesn't quite feel like fall just yet in SoCal. That may have something to do with the fact that we're still experiencing triple-digit temperatures, but in my heart of hearts it's time for oranges, yellows, reds, and browns paired with pumpkin spice everything.

Besides, it's not like the equinox is the ONLY game in town today. There are so many random holidays today, from the good (Hobbit Day, American Business Woman's Day, Elephant Appreciation Day, Ice Cream Cone Day), to the bad* (White Chocolate Day), to the somewhere-in-between (Chainmail Day? Falls Prevention Awareness Day?)

*Yeah, yeah, yeah β€” I know there are some people out there that think white chocolate is dope. That's fine. I just happen to disagree with that assessment.

Before we get to this week's amusing links let's celebrate a few September 22nd birthdays!

Michael Faraday, 1791. Mr. Faraday did not have the same access to formal education as other scientific luminaries, but his work in the study of electricity and electromagnetism led to the invention of the first electric motors. Noice!

Tommy Lasorda, 1927. Best known for his two decade stint managing the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, Mr. Lasorda was also well-known for his pitching...of products. Pizza, pasta sauce, pastries, shaving cream, banks, beer, yogurt, Disneyland, antacids, and soda pop are just a sampling of the many (many) products he was spokesman for over the course of his life.

Bad-ass rock 'n' roller Joan Jett, bad-ass goth 'n' roller Nick Cave, and (presumably) bad-ass opera singer Andrea Bocelli were all born this day in 1958. In a three-way cage match I think we all know who would emerge victorious...

It's Joan Jett's world, and we're all just living in it.

It's Joan's world, and we're all just living in it.

Alright, you've waited long enough β€” let's get to some fun links!

1. Comedian Matt Broussard defends the gender reveal party, and he makes a compelling argument as to why.

Matt is one of the funniest stand-ups working today, and if you happen to be a comedy nerd like I am, you'll want to follow him and catch him live whenever you possibly can. You won't regret it!

2. Makeup and body artist Jody Steel does some next level sh!t.

Anytime an artist works in three dimensions (compared to the paltry two I typically operate in) it's like witnessing a particularly impressive magic trick. Be amazed!

3. Designer, inventor, and futurist Svilen reveals the secrets behind everyday items, and it's fascinating!

Svilen's TikToks explain the logic and reasoning behind all sorts of things we take for granted, like why barns are painted red, why Comic Sans (as aesthetically loathsome as it is) is actually really great for folks with dyslexia, and why alcoholic beverages are served in transparent glasses. Fascinating!

4. Welcome to Scarfolk, a town you'll (probably) never leave.

If you enjoyed Boredwalk's Grievance Journal (and our overall design and comedic sensibilities), you'll likely love Richard Littler's vintage-inspired publications about a fictitious town in northwestern England where no one is really welcome, and children are the least-trusted members of the community (naturally).

5. Edible derangements from Singaporean artist QimmyShimmy!

What better way to immerse yourself in the spirit of the season than with macarons made of shrunken baby heads? I can't think of one.*

*No actual babies (or their heads) were harmed in the making of these sculptures.

OK! Hopefully these little diversions helped to brighten your day! We'll be back here in your inbox on Friday with more random holidays, celebrity birthdays, and some other fun treats β€” maybe even new art (fingers crossed)! Until then...

Peace, love, and fall vibes,

Matt
